How To Really Hit The Jackpot Photographing Horses

As a hobbyist, focused on growing my photography business, I rely on Reader-Support. I earn a small commission from purchases made from my site. I only promote products that I have used and rely on in the field. Any support is appreciated, and will most likely help me fuel my Tacoma on my next adventure.

Photographing horses, like this mare, is a challenge.

TITLE: Hashknife Spirit

DATE TAKEN: July 2010

DESCRIPTION:

In the summer of 2010, during an ongoing ranch photography project, I attended the Babbitt Ranches Colt Sale. I arrived early to capture images of the horses and whatever else caught my eye. The overcast skies let in the perfect light for well-lit subjects with a great background. Over a half-day, I shot several hundred images, including a few in my Horses Gallery, and offered for purchase.

The light, veining and manes on both horses, and the contrast of the two animals’ coloring, make this a favorite image of mine. After careful consideration, I named this photo “Hashknife Spirit,” which captures the brand and the event.

LESSONS LEARNED:

In the heat of the moment, tracking the horses’ movements as they receive directions from the cowboys can be challenging. I’m not going to lie; I didn’t remember taking this specific shot after the fact. However, I was happy to see it in the lineup during my post-production routine. Looking back at this experience is an excellent reminder to focus on your camera, its settings, and especially the subject(s). The more prepared you are for the day of shooting, the better images you will take away at the end of the day.

MY GEAR:

Although I shot this image with Canon gear, which might still be available, I now use a similar Sony lens that I recommend.

The 70-300mm lens is a great complement to a landscape lineup. It also allows for getting close to animals, wildlife, or, in this case, horses.
